07Why Collectors Want It

  • Neo Destiny (2002) was the final set of the Neo era, and its Dark Pokemon holos are prized vintage cards.
  • The 1st Edition Dark Gengar trades around $963 raw versus ~$326 for the Unlimited print - the 1st Edition stamp is the key value driver.
  • In PSA 10 the 1st Edition has realized roughly $14,127 (PriceCharting, May 2026), reflecting how scarce gem-mint vintage holos are.
  • Dark Gengar is a Stage 2 'Dark' Pokemon, part of the Team Rocket-style subset that vintage collectors actively chase.

08Competitive Playability

Tier: None

Stage 2 Gengar with 70 HP; top attack around 30 damage. Functions as an evolution-chain piece rather than a tournament attacker.

09Card Moves and Abilities

Ability: Deep Sleep

As long as any Dark Gengar are in play, a player flips 2 coins for each of his or her Pokémon that is Asleep at the end of each turn. If either of them is tails, that Pokémon is still Asleep. This power stops working if Dark Gengar is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.

Pull In Cost: Psychic + Psychic + Psychic · 30 damage

If your opponent has any Benched Pokémon, you may choose 1 of them and switch it with the Defending Pokémon (before doing damage or other effects of this attack). Either way, the Defending Pokémon is now Asleep.

10Grading and Population

PSA 10 estimate: ~$14,127 (PriceCharting realized, May 2026; 1st Edition)

Edition matters enormously here: the 1st Edition print carries the premium, and Neo-era holos are condition-sensitive, so PSA 10 copies are scarce and trade well into five figures.

Other graders: BGS and CGC also grade vintage Pokemon; PSA dominates secondary-market liquidity.
