Hidden Fates is unusual in that the standard set (cards 1–68) is largely overshadowed by the Shiny Vault. The Shiny Vault inserts — pulled from special tins, Elite Trainer Boxes, and booster packs — are where the real value lives. When collectors talk about “a Hidden Fates pull,” they almost always mean a Shiny Vault card.

03 Understanding the Shiny Vault

Hidden Fates packs contained a fixed structure: four commons, one uncommon, and one “secret” slot. In standard sets, that slot pulls from the set itself. In Hidden Fates, the secret slot could be a Shiny Vault card — an alternate-color version of a Pokémon from across the Sun & Moon era.

The Shiny Vault runs from SV1 to SV94 (not all numbers used), covering shiny basic Pokémon (SV1–SV69) and shiny GX cards (SV70–SV94). The GX shiny cards are the chase targets.

Key fact: Shiny Vault cards show “SV” in the card number. Standard set cards are numbered 1–68. If your card says SV, it’s a Shiny Vault pull.

04 Grading Guide: Hidden Fates Shiny Vault

Silvering / scratching on the rainbow texture — the alternate-color treatment on GX cards can show micro-scratches under raking light. Always examine under a bright light source before grading.
Centering — Hidden Fates had quality control issues given how quickly product was repackaged and distributed. Left/right centering is the most common issue.
Corner wear — many Hidden Fates cards were handled multiple times before grading. Inspect corners carefully for micro-whitening.
Print lines — some Shiny Vault pulls have visible print artifacts on the alternate-color artwork that preclude high grades.

05 Why Hidden Fates Holds Value

Hidden Fates launched at a low print run relative to demand, and that supply constraint has never fully resolved. Sealed Hidden Fates product still commands above-retail prices years later — unusual for any TCG expansion.

The deeper reason is structural: Hidden Fates concentrates its value into a small number of genuinely beautiful cards. The Shiny Vault format turned out to be one of the most successful product designs in the hobby’s history. Every subsequent “Shiny” or “Paldean Fates”-style set is trying to replicate what Hidden Fates did in 2019.

For collectors in 2026, Hidden Fates is the originator of a format that’s now a perennial top seller. Owning the original is meaningful in a way that later iterations aren’t.
