03 Understanding Fossil Rarity Tiers

Holo Rare (16 cards): The primary collector tier. Foil background with full artwork. 04 Grading Guide: Fossil

Dark artwork and scratching: Gengar and Haunter feature deep purple and blue-black backgrounds that show foil scratching far more visibly than lighter-coloured holos. Even light surface handling will produce micro-scratches visible at the right angle. Always examine Ghost-type holos under strong oblique light before purchase or submission.
Centering: As with Jungle and Base Set, centering on 1st Edition Fossil cards is highly variable. PSA 9 requires approximately 60/40 on the front on both axes; PSA 10 is stricter. Off-centre print runs mean a large portion of 1st Edition Fossil holos are grade-capped before condition is even evaluated.
Corner and edge whitening: Black WotC borders show white fibre exposure readily. Corners are the highest-risk area. Even one visibly white corner will typically reduce a grade from PSA 9 to PSA 8 or lower.
Print lines: Thin parallel press lines across the card face are common throughout WotC-era stock. Minor print lines are typically absorbed into a PSA 8 or 9 grade; prominent or numerous lines will deduct further.
Card back yellowing: Age and improper storage contribute to yellowing on the card back. This detracts in grading and is irreversible. Cards stored in binders with PVC sleeves are particularly at risk of discolouration.
PSA population: PSA populations for Fossil 1st Edition holos are well-documented. Gengar PSA 10 in 1st Edition is extremely scarce. Review current pop report data before buying or submitting graded examples — the investment case changes significantly based on how many PSA 10 copies already exist.
